Why organisations need to do more to make us happy.

Are you happy in your work? Do you love waking early up and striding into the office, with a coffee in hand and a feeling of eternal optimism in your heart? Or do you crawl out of bed in the morning, sluggish and uninspired, with a lack of motivation in your heart and no coffee in hand - partly due to your salary, which has been frozen in time for the past five years?

If you fall into the latter category, don’t be alarmed, because you’re not alone. In fact, you are part of the 25% of employees that the CIPD (Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development) has identified as being unhappy in work. Today’s Guardian reports on the CIPDs latest findings, which identifies a lack of training and development, the effect of poor management on morale and productivity and frozen wages as just some of the things that are effecting motivation and happiness in the workplace.

While economic factors and the tightening of belts mean that addressing all such workplace woes isn’t always possible, it’s time for some organisations to wake up.

Organisations need to do much more. Having motivational and inspirational leaders isn’t a luxury; it’s essential in order to hold onto great employees.  And having leaders who can embrace and implement strong and clear HR policies, including robust training and development structures, is essential for keeping those employees motivated.

And as research has proven, time and time again, a motivated employee is a happy employee.
